Working Bee Week
Sun 30 May 10 to Sun 6 Jun 10
As the previous working bee week was quite successful with some extra notification, we have programmed our next Licola Working Bee, again for a full week, to enable a broad spread of Lions to attend for any or all of the week.
You can commit for any period of time from noon Sunday 30 May 10 to Sunday 6 Jun 10 or the entire period.
Your contributions for whatever time you can provide will help us to reduce the amount of outstanding maintenance work necessary to be completed prior to our peak season.

Chairman’s Report
Important dates for your Diary
Working Bee Week: Sun 30 May to Sun 6 Jun
Don’t forget these dates. Our camp is looking really good at present however there are still many tasks that only good numbers at a Working Bee can manage to complete as a team.
If you have not already done so please contact Adam 5148-8791, or Peter 5122-1745, to confirm your attendance. They will also let you know what tools to bring.
September Lions Sponsored Camp 254 – Mon 27 Sep to Fri 1 Oct
Children 8 – 11 years old only
Our last Lions Sponsored Camp (in April) was really well received by the children however we were a little short on numbers. The Christmas Camps are always good but the autumn and s pring camps offer more moderate conditions, less heat and flies, and just as many activities.
Please continue to send children to all our camps but consider this September camp to 'beat the rush' and start selecting your children now.
If clubs have any questions about this please contact your District Licola representative or check the website.

Activity Reports
Houses 15 and 16
Last month we advised that we will be starting work to upgrade these two houses and ensure they are 'wheelchair friendly'. This very concept opens up our camp to so many physically disadvantaged people that would not otherwise have the opportunity to visit. To ensure we have every aspect of care of people with a physical disability covered we are starting to seek out some basic aids. Initially we are looking for shower chairs and lifting hoists.
If you know of any family, aged care facility or hospital that has such equipment they no longer need could you please contact Adam to provide him with details.
Spinal Board for the Pool
We really need to have a spinal board on hand in our pool area in the unlikely event that someone should damage their neck/spine. It would enable easier and safer removal from the water. Can anybody help?
Table tennis
The table tennis tables are now fully operational in the Sherlock Centre.
Flying Fox
We have recently had some problems with our flying fox and it has, at times, been out of action. We are making every effort to have this problem rectified as soon as possible.
Self Catering Kitchen
Facilities in our self catering kitchen are very good but it is fair to say that the benches and cupboards are looking very tired. We are in the midst of negotiations to have a major up-grade andwill keep you informed.
A message from our Camp Manager: Adam Wake
Lions Sponsored camps are much more than giving our sponsored children a great time (which they do have), it is a 'place apart' from their normal lives at home. Licola is where these children can be themselves and spend time with positive
adults, and other children who have similar life experiences.
They are a 'peer group', not just by age but also by their experiences. At Licola they are allowed to be what they actually are; theyare allowed to be children, something many of them are not able to be at home.
We, at Lions Village Licola, practice what being a Lion is about and make every effort to deliver what can truly be a life changing experience. We may never know just what an effect our camps have on individual children but given the frequency
that we have adults arrive at Licola telling us that they were here as a child XX years ago, or a leader on a LSC that says, and I quote “The time I have had here was truly amazing…life changing. You guys do not know how important this week
has been to these children.” We know we make a difference.

Lions Village Licola
Welcome to the next six months of our Lions year and may we all continue to work together in harmony for the betterment of our Community. I hope that everyone has enjoyed a safe and Happy Christmas and New Year.
Our November working bee weekend at Licola was a great success with members, partners, friends and children in attendance. The four children from Little River all enjoyed themselves and with the guidance from their mother, they worked together clearing the rocks from the oval – a big job and very well done.
Members from the following clubs travelled to Licola – Hamlyn Heights; Colac; Lara; Bannockburn and Little River. A big thank you to all for your assistance it was very much appreciated – together we all made a difference.
Various tasks were completed, such as cleaning the houses, mowing of all grass areas around the houses and the entire oval, removal of rocks from the oval, the service of the tractor was done by Lindsay, not to mention John and Lindsay having to repair the broken water pipe and after heavy rain during the night a large branch had broken from a tree in front of the self contained kitchen so Lions at work to chop the branch and clear it away. We all arrived home on the Sunday evening exhausted but thankful for our weekend away doing our Community work. Good fun and fellowship was had by all. These jobs done, now the children sponsored camps for those disadvantaged and less fortunate children will proceed with the first camp commencing on 4 Jan10.
January 2010
Lions Partner Lindsay and myself saw the excited children from the Geelong region boarded onto 2 coaches and leave Geelong Town Hall at 07:30 on Mon 4 Jan.
For some, this is their first camp and means five days away from home. These camps are sponsored by various Lions Clubs throughout our region and private businesses. The camp is a chance for these children to participate in activities, to learn and develop new skills along with having fun and most of all forge new friendships.
Our grateful thanks to the local leaders and volunteers who assist in various tasks throughout the duration of the camp. Those who give their time and without whom these camps would not be possible. Many thanks
Working-Bee Weekend
Fri 20 Nov to Sun 22 Nov 09The bus departed from Geelong and arrived at Licola at 11:45, thanks to excellent driving from Frank O'Neill from Hamlyn Heights Lions Club. Lion John 'Macca' McNamara followed later and arrived early on Saturday with his 'Jims Mowing' equipment.
The list of required tasks included:
- Mowing the grass around the cottages and facilities;
- Picking up the river stones and rocks that stop the bottom and top oval from being mowed;
- Repair and paint the Tractor Bridge;
- Weed the garden beds around the cottages;
- Remove all the cobwebs from outside of all buildings, and;
- Remove the dead insects and bugs from the light fittings
(Gathering for lunch) (Picking up rocks)
Despite the steady rain late on Saturday afternoon, all these tasks were completed. A joyful BBQ was our reward for a great days work enhanced with great friendship.
Additional work was required to repair the main water supply pipe to the camp following damage by the mower, the long grass along the bank between the cottages and the bottom oval cut down past the stables.
(Lindsay & Macca repairing the water pipe; well, it was raining anyway!)
The heavy rain continued throughout the night and into Sunday Morning with all of us waking thinking that we would be able to leave for home early. However, just as we were gathering for breakfast a large bough approx 750mm in diameter crashed to the ground on the oval.
As a consequence after breakfast, all hands were on deck clearing and removing the bough from the oval and cutting it up and stacking it for firewood, all in the heavy rain.
(The fallen bough) Chainsaws all the go!)
After a great lunch, we packed up the bus and headed west for the sleepy city of Geelong.
Thanks must go to Licola District Chairman, Eva Barwise for organising a great weekend.
