Persistence pays! Macarthur Club, which sponsored our District winner last year, has broken through. Their relationship with Hawkesdale School is well established, and now they have finally managed to get Macarthur Primary School involved. A small country town Club has two schools participating in this project. Well done, Lesley Addinsall.

How easy is it? I received an email from Lion Kim Sadler of Heywood Club, with an interesting approach. She is once again working with Heywood Consolidated School, and was invited by the teachers to address a group of eligible students, showing how much support she has in the School. (Note that Kim has been a Lion for only a little over 2 years). The teachers have undertaken to set aside the necessary time for 53 students to work on their entries. And here’s the punchline - To begin her presentation, she asked the question, “Does anyone know why I am here and why I am dressed in this uniform?” One answer (amongst others) was, “To recruit members.” Kim goes on to say, “Now, maybe we should be thinking about getting a Leo Club organised, because if some students are thinking like this, then ‘seize the moment’ springs to mind.

Food for thought for all of us, and particularly for the 51 Clubs which are not yet participating in this valuable project.

International Peace Poster Competition

We have now just passed the level of participation that we had last year. While this is good to see, it remains a disappointing result so far. It is difficult to understand why there is not a greater involvement in something so simple which has the potential to give us so much exposure. As an example, I have had a second order from Ararat Club, taking them to 8 kits!

DG Bob Gilchrist and I visited Hawkesdale Primary School to present Sarah Herring with her prize and received a very warm welcome. Considering the size of the Macarthur Club and the population of the school, to have 16 entries was a significant result. I have kits available, ready to respond to your phone call or email. $20 and a little bit of time to participate in this worthwhile project could be a great investment for your Club.

Operation Friendship

This year we decided to focus on Europe for our Operation Friendship candidates. We received five expressions of interest, all from Germany, and these resulted in two applications. In conjunction with DGE Max Oberlander, we have selected our visitor for 2010, and he has accepted our invitation.

We will be welcoming Lion Joachim Buttke, from Sottrum near Bremen. He is a Member of the Lions club of Ottersberg/Wuemm in District 111NB. As his wife is unable to travel long distances he will be visiting us alone, though he may be joined by a business associate whose name also is Joachim for the last week of his stay with us.

We are seeking host families for the period Fri 22 Oct till Thu 18 Nov inclusive. The plan is to have four families hosting for about a week each. We will need a host in the Geelong area for the Convention period, so that Joachim can enjoy maximum involvement at the Convention.

If you would like to be involved in hosting please contact me, preferably by email, with your contact details and any date preferences you have during the project period. We will require someone to transport Joachim to Tullamarine on Thu 18 Nov 10 for his departure at 17:00.

‘The Power of Peace’

I quote - ‘Everyone sees things differently. Tolerate others and know that their view isn’t going to be the same as yours.’

These are the words of a twelve year old girl. The Heywood Lions Club sponsored Heywood’s local school for the 2009 Peace Poster Contest.

Judging took place Mon 2 Nov 09, with the winner presented with their award Mon 9 Nov 09.

It was a privilege to carry out this contest. I shall let the quoted words speak for themselves…
