Health (Hearing, Mobility, Diabetes, LEHP)

Max Begely (Helen)
(Simpson & District)

Australian Lions Children Mobility Foundation (ALCMF)

Over the last three months I have received three applications. Two being for David Hart Walkers at a cost of $11,980 each both from the Werribee area and another for a Dynamic Gait Trainer costing $5,795 from the Marshall Grovedale Waurn Ponds area.

Werribee Lions Club has fully sponsored a young boy called Aden with a David Hart Walker ($11,980) to enable him to be upright and play with his peers. It was a few weeks after this sponsorship that they applied for the second walker.

The Werribee Lions should be congratulated for their outstanding support of this project.

Zone2 Chairman Michael Clark and the Werribee Lions are working on the second application.

Zone 4/5 Chairman Michael Harris and John Emerson have taken up the challenge to raise the $5,795 for the Dynamic Gait Trainer for the little girl in their district.

Update on LEHP

A recent increase in funding has allowed the National Executive to produce a substantial number of new brochures at lower cost per unit, produce vastly improved A4 size posters, and introduce a new DVD (with voice over) that will simplify presentations to club members and community groups of the basic LEHP message.

If your Club has been a contributor previously, we look forward to your continued support. If your Club has not yet contributed to the programme, please consider doing so. Let us make sure V2 continues to be a leading District in 2010 by having 100% of our Clubs as participating partners. The information you can then share within your club and community will ensure some people now at risk of severely impaired sight will be spared significant sight loss. LEHP is Lions own sight saving program – it is so easy to participate.

LCIF has engaged LEHP Australia to develop its website to extend the information into all major recognised languages of Lions thus giving world-wide recognition to the LEHP Australia programme.

I would remind Lions that LEHP is a Taxation Office deductible gift recipient and personal or corporate donations of above $2 are tax deductible.

I eagerly look forward to all 201V2 Clubs leaping into LEHP during 2010.

75th Anniversary

Simpson and District Lions helped the show society celebrate its 75th Anniversary with the newly painted catering caravan, which was painted by the children of the Simpson Primary School.

Lions also donated 300 bundles of health brochures to the mystery show bag.

There was a special display making the community aware of the LEHP programme, showing the DVD on eye awareness and hearing dogs. We enjoyed many visitors during the day.

The new decade of LEHP-Australia

Thank you to the 44 clubs within the 201-V2 District who made donations towards the Lions Eye Health Programme – Australia in 2009. We received a total of $8,900 from your District.

During 2009, your contributions assisted us with updating many of our valuable Lions and community resources, including new brochures, flyers, posters and information manuals. It also allowed the implementation on numerous training days, community road shows & information stalls.

With a busy year ahead here is an example of what you can expect from LEHP-Australia in 2010.
• New LEHP-Australia presentation with voiceover
• New LEHP-Australia website
• LEHP publications
• Even more training days
• Booth at the MD Convention in Mildura
• Booth at the International Convention in Sydney

Although we strive to provide the latest information through all of our resources, our primary focus will continue to be to work with you the Lions community, in spreading the message about avoidable vision loss and the importance of regular eye examinations within your own community and families.

With your enthusiasm and our resources, together we can fight against avoidable vision loss and blindness and make a real difference.

Contact the National Programme Manager, Ms Leah Evans today and find out how you can get involved.

I would like to thank Lions Members for their support at the Camperdown Convention. I do appreciate your interest in the Hearing Dog and Child Mobility stand.

I received $130.00 in donations in my yellow dog and $360.00 in merchandise sales. Trevor Hirst assisted on the Child Mobility stand and received $220.00 in merchandise sales.

I received several pairs of used glasses at the Convention. I have sent a Christmas cake box full to Lion Recycle for sight.

Through the generosity of the Lions Club of Portland, St Johns Lutheran School Portland will have a Sound Field System this year. Well done Portland.

It was a happy Christmas for a Lara boy with the good news that his Kid Walker valued at $4,734 has been sponsored. A huge thank you goes to Early Choice, Macarthur and District Lions and Lara Lions Club.

Hearing Dog Sponsored

Ararat Lions have sponsored a Hearing dog for a lady who lives in Ararat. The dog is called Toby and we hope this is the beginning of happy relationship.

Four schools have received a Sound System in our Region. They are Buangor Primary School, Emmanuel College (Warrnambool), Stawell Primary School and Horsham Primary School.

The benefits of these sounds systems as quoted by the teachers is that the students can hear them and thus the improvement in the child’s work is amazing and the whole class room behaviour is also improved.

Please visit my stand at the Convention in Camperdown to find out more information on Hearing Dog, Sound Systems, Child Mobility, Diabetes, LEHP. Feed my yellow hearing dog with a donation and you could be the lucky winner.

Recycle for sight

Hamilton Lions Club is having a local campaign to collect 2,000 pairs of glasses from their community.

They are contacting all schools, clubs, elderly citizens etc.

I would like to mount a challenge to all Lions Clubs of V2 District to participate in this project and collect as many pairs of glasses for recycling as possible.

Small numbers of glasses can be passed onto me via your Zone Chairman as we meet 4 times a year. Large amounts can be sent directly to Ken Leonard at PO Box 3021 Clontarf MDC 4019 Qld.
